Landa Park: A Respite for Nature Lovers

This public park is a truly wonderful place to spend an afternoon, whether you’re looking to explore, relax or even get in your daily workout. There is a series of running and walking trails that wind their way through the lush greenery, while the long bridges that traverse the rivers add a scenic view to your route.

If you want to get an even closer look at the gentle waters, Landa Park rents out tubes for adults and children that enable you to spend the day floating along the river’s lengths. There are also paddle boats and areas where you can feed the ducks, and you can even fish from the sturdy piers with the proper license. Picnic areas provide shady spots for lunch outdoors, and the sand volleyball court is the perfect addition to any fun-filled day in the park.

Naegelin’s Bakery: Visit the Oldest Bakery in Texas

McKenna Children’s Museum: Splash, Play and Learn

If you've visited the water table at McKenna Children's Museum before with your brood and enjoyed splashing around, it's time to plan a repeat visit. The museum's outdoor water table recently underwent a full makeover, so there are even more aquatic features to explore than there were before.

Help kids take aim at targets with high-powered squirt guns and watch while they let it rip. Face off against your own youngsters at the boat racing ramp. Step back while they play at the fishing pond, ogle the bucket conveyor belt, or dip their fingers in the drops being circulated by the water wheel.

The water table is just one example of the way McKenna Children's Museum makes learning fun and accessible for all kids. Other exhibits teach about more than science. Little ones can learn about money, for instance, at the pint-sized ATM with and bank. They can pilot a space rocket, pick up faux fruits and veggies at the kid-sized grocery store, or even get behind the wheel of an ambulance.

Gruene Hall Brings a Piece of Old Texas Culture to New Braunfels

BB King. Miranda Lambert. Garth Brooks. They've all taken the stage at Gruene Hall since 1975, the year that the dance hall's owner decided to book only performers who penned their own songs. The hall's roots stretch back about a century before this game-changing decision, though. The 6,000-square-foot dance hall was actually built back in 1878, and has seen everything from high school graduations to pitches by traveling salesmen.

Even as contemporary performers take the stage at Gruene Hall today, clues of its rich history linger. For one thing, its soaring tin roof remains in place. It even still boasts the same design as it did back then: front bar, back stage, massive beer garden, and walls that open on the side of the building. Vintage signs from the 1930s and '40s cover the walls around the stage, too. So when you're in the mood for some dancing and boozing in an old-school atmosphere, check out New Braunfels' legendary Gruene Hall.

The Gourmet Ice Co.: Cool Off With a Hibiscus Mint Shaved Ice

The Gourmet Ice Co. serves classic Italian shaved ice with a bit of a modern, gourmet twist, and it does it all from an adorable little shop in the heart of New Braunfels. The company started from humble beginnings when it operated out of a refurbished vintage Airstream trailer, but its much larger storefront offers more indoor and outdoor seating and even stays open year-round.

The Gourmet Ice Co. is different from traditional shaved ice shops because its owners make a point to use only healthy, all natural ingredients in all of its small-batch mixes, from natural cane sugar to locally-sourced, organic produce and aromatic dried herbs. The unique list of flavors includes staples like blackberry lavender, chocolate sea salt caramel, and hibiscus mint, as well as a variety of seasonal options that change weekly.

The Gourmet Ice Co. is open noon to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.
