This European-style deli and cafe serves custom sandwiches made with fresh-baked bread and unique toppings, including the Le Poulet with goat cheese and cornichons and the Le Provencal with smoked gouda and imported bacon. Start with the Onion Rings at Clear Springs Restaurant

Handcrafted onion rings; fried catfish; tender slabs of steak. These are the cornerstones of the menu at Clear Springs Restaurant, a small Texas chain that's been in business for three decades. Over that time, the kitchen team has been able to perfect their signature dishes, and you can try all of them at the branch in New Braunfels.

Its "world famous" onion rings come in small or "Texas size" portions, so only order the latter if you plan on sharing the crunchy, hand-breaded onion rings with your table. You don't have to start with the onion rings, though. Fried pickles, okra, and even mushrooms offer crispy alternatives to the signature appetizer. Fried fare dominates the list of entrees, too. Order the fried catfish or shrimp, chicken fried steak or chicken fried chicken, or the fried fish tacos. Many of the fried eats also come grilled for more health-conscious eaters.

Soak Up the Atmosphere at Huisache Grill

Founders Don and Lynn took what could've been a liability for Huisache Grill and transformed it into a major selling point. The building in which the eatery resides was falling apart, to say the least, when they first bought it. Walls speckled with holes; a storefront that barely registered on the street; trains chugging by less than 20 feet away. Don and Lynn overlooked all of this, instead choosing to see the history that lived at 303 W. San Antonio Street. From storage shed to haunted house to antique shop, the building had seen a lot of action. Today, it features warm exposed wood overhead and underfoot, a working fireplace, and a "pavilion" area where guests can eat in the fresh air.

The ambience alone would probably be enough to draw many guests to Huisache Grill, but the fresh American fare doesn't hurt, either. Regulars suggest starting your meal with the fried brie, embellished with candied pecans, raspberry chipotle sauce, and tart Granny Smith apples. The move on to the signature chicken tortilla soup or dive right into an entree such as the hot and crunchy trout, encrusted with sesame almond breading and accompanied by jalapeno tartar sauce. Salmon, chicken, steak, and pasta round out the menu at Huisache Grill.

The menu at Spud Ranch claims to have "a little something for everybody," and a quick glance suggests that this statement isn't too far off the mark. At this fast-casual eatery in New Braunfels, diners can take their pick from more than 20 variations on the basic baked potato — not that there's anything "basic" about these spuds.

Easily able to feed two, piping-hot baked potatoes at Spud Ranch are sliced down the center, then stuffed to the brim with the diner's choice of ingredients beyond your standard sour cream-and-chives. The teriyaki spud, for instance, overflows with teriyaki chicken, bell peppers, sauteed onions, and steamed broccoli. The hot wing spud is another popular choice; it delivers mouthfuls of buffalo-style chicken, cheddar cheese, and blue cheese.

Diners watching their waistlines can opt for the steamed veggie spud or a garden salad, but Spud Ranch is the kind of place where diets are best checked at the door.

Toast a Special Occasion at Gruene River Grill in New Braunfels

Gruene River Grill is equally suited to casual lunches and special-occasion dinners. This is due, in part, to the eatery's location: It's perched right on the edge of the Guadalupe River, promising water views from many positions with the restaurant, particularly the outdoor patio. Inside, Gruene River Grill boasts soaring ceilings, a working fireplace, plus a wealth of exposed brick and wooden beams that impart a gritty-chic vibe to the space.

As for the food, diners can expect a seafood-centric menu that spans fish tacos and pan-seared tilapia to a gorgonzola burger and country fried steak. All of the above can be preceded with an order of shrimp wontons, fried calamari, spinach-artichoke dip, or another selection from the list of appetizers. Buc-ee’s: Refuel Your Car— and Your Snack Supply!

Although it may seem strange to get excited about a gas station, Buc-ee’s is a much different type of gas station than anything you’ve seen before. This combination gas station and convenience store is much larger than most similar establishments, and its interior resembles a grocery store more than a convenience store. Large aisles dedicated to beef jerky, pulled pork, seasoned nuts, and other Texan favorites offer an almost endless assortment of road trip snacks, and there are ICEE machines on the end caps of every aisle.

Just about everything at Buc-ee’s is made by the store’s own in-house brand, including the wide variety of candies that includes the Beaver Hut and multi-flavored taffies. If you’re looking for a more filling meal, Buc-ee’s also offers a hot food bar filled with sausage kolaches, barbecue brisket sandwiches, and even New York-style Reubens. Outside, Buc-ee’s offers some of the most affordable gas in the state!
