Cafe Brussels: Brewing Up Fun in Houston

Café Brussels is a cozy neighborhood bistro that’s quickly become a favorite dining spot. Fans of Belgian beer love the fact that the café has the largest selection of the country’s beers on tap in Houston. Chimay Blanche, Hoegaarden, and Stella Artois are just a few of the brews you can nestle up to at this warm, friendly spot. The food menu features classic Belgian dishes like Moules Marinieres – mussels steamed in white wine, Le Lapin aux Pruneaux – rabbit leg with prunes, and Le Cordon Bleu – chicken stuffed with ham & swiss cheese. Be sure to save room for a luscious dessert like Dame Blanche – vanilla ice cream with warm chocolate sauce & whipped cream.

Happy Presidents’ Day

Remembering the courage and vision of past and present leaders, we honor and share the spirit of Presidents' Day together as a nation.

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Wishing everyone a day filled with fun and happy memories!

The Houston Zoo: From Amphibians to Zebras

Plan a day at The Houston Zoo, and get up close and personal with everything from amphibians to zebras. Seemingly endless exhibits—including carnivorous cats, playful primates, and beckoning birds—will provide hours of entertainment. Exhibits are renovated to keep the animals comfortable, and the zoo is contracting new habitats for gorillas, which will return in 2015. The zookeepers are very knowledgeable, so make it a point to make it to one of their talks. Kids love the Giraffe Feeding Platform that elevates visitors to be face to face with these gentle giants. A 4-D movie experience is another family favorite.

Visitors find the zoo clean and well maintained, with a strong conservation and education mission. Admission is reasonable, especially compared to other big city zoos; adults are $14 and children are $10. (You can save a few extra bucks if you purchase the tickets at Fiesta Mart.) The Houston Zoo provides free parking, but it fills up fast on the weekends.

4 Tips for the Perfect Pour of Wine

Pouring wine is more than just tipping a bottle over a glass. Certain wines need to breathe before drinking, and pouring the right amount is essential. Check out these four great tips for pouring the perfect glass of wine.

  • Not all wines are served cold, so be sure to keep bottles at the correct temperature before pouring. White and sparkling wines are best served between 40—50 degrees Fahrenheit; full-bodied whites and light, fruity reds, 50—60 degrees Fahrenheit; full-bodied reds and Ports, 60—65 degrees Fahrenheit. Invest in a thermometer to be sure you have the right temperature.
  • Give the bottle a quick taste test before serving. This will give you an idea of its temperature and familiarize yourself with what you're pouring.
  • The right glass gives the wine room to open up its flavors. Tulip-shaped glasses are ideal and be sure they are clean, as musty or grimy glasses can ruin a wine flavor.
  • If serving a red wine, pour it into a decanter first to let it sit for an hour before serving. The full flavor of the wine will be evident on the first sip.
