Clear the Clutter: How to Organize Your Closet

After a week of discarding outfits at the bottom of your closet and then dashing out the door, your closet is looking a bit worse for the wear. If you want to organize your closet and make it more functional for those hectic mornings, here are a few simple tips.

  1. Create a hierarchy of clothes. Some things, like undershirts and jeans, are worn almost everyday, while that formal dress or tuxedo is not. In order to maximize your closet’s efficiency, store your most-used clothes at eye level, and tuck the rest away at the top or bottom of the closet.
  2. Invest in some storage units. Decide what your closet is lacking, and then invest in those things. If you have a surplus of hanging racks but no space for socks, purchase a few simple plastic drawers to organize small items. If your closet lacks hanging space, you can install a temporary bar or even purchase an attractive garment rack for just outside the closet.
  3. Add a shoe rack. If you’re tired of tripping over runaway shoes on your way to your work clothes every morning, adding a shoe rack (or two) can help. Simple wooden ones can easily line the bottom of your closet, while plastic over-the-door shoe racks are great for storing flip flops, slippers, and other low-profile shoes.
  4. Look for unused space. Getting creative with the space in your closet can help you to maximize storage even further. If you have a crawl space or a few feet of extra room above the closet rod, don’t be shy about using it for clothes or shoes.
