Shelby Farms Park: A Recreation Spot for Nature Lovers

One of the largest urban parks in the United States, Memphis’s Shelby Farms is more than five times the size of New York’s Central Park and offers a wide range of recreation for outdoor lovers.

An assortment of walking and bicycling trails criss-crosses the landscape, taking visitors past some spectacular scenery. Special notice goes to the Tour de Wolf, an awesome unpaved trail that stretches a little over six miles through the forest. Local anglers love to visit Catch’em Lake, an artificial lake that is kept regularly stocked with fish. Two other lakes allow rowboating, a great way to while away an afternoon. Dog lovers bring their pooches to the tremendous off-leash area on the park’s east end, and there’s even a native herd of bison that wander part of the park, lazily munching on the grass.

Shelby Farms is open sunrise to sunset daily. The playground opens at 9 a.m. and closes one hour before dusk.

Shop, Stroll and Dine Your Way Through the Cooper Young Historic District

The Cooper Young Historic District is one of Memphis's most popular spots for shopping, dining, and taking a pleasant stroll. Visitors to the area enter through the Cooper-Young Trestle, a massive steel sculpture that depicts some of the local businesses and attractions; it’s like walking into a different world.

Some local hot spots include the Young Avenue Deli and the Java Cabana coffeehouse. Throw in some excellent art galleries, antique stores, and much more and you have a great place to while away a day!

Every fall, the neighborhood hosts the wildly popular Cooper-Young Festival, which draws massive crowds to browse works of art from more than 300 international artists.
