Shelby Farms Park: A Recreation Spot for Nature Lovers

One of the largest urban parks in the United States, Memphis’s Shelby Farms is more than five times the size of New York’s Central Park and offers a wide range of recreation for outdoor lovers.

An assortment of walking and bicycling trails criss-crosses the landscape, taking visitors past some spectacular scenery. Special notice goes to the Tour de Wolf, an awesome unpaved trail that stretches a little over six miles through the forest. Local anglers love to visit Catch’em Lake, an artificial lake that is kept regularly stocked with fish. Two other lakes allow rowboating, a great way to while away an afternoon. Dog lovers bring their pooches to the tremendous off-leash area on the park’s east end, and there’s even a native herd of bison that wander part of the park, lazily munching on the grass.

Shelby Farms is open sunrise to sunset daily. The playground opens at 9 a.m. and closes one hour before dusk.

Clear the Clutter: How to Organize Your Closet

After a week of discarding outfits at the bottom of your closet and then dashing out the door, your closet is looking a bit worse for the wear. If you want to organize your closet and make it more functional for those hectic mornings, here are a few simple tips.

  1. Create a hierarchy of clothes. Some things, like undershirts and jeans, are worn almost everyday, while that formal dress or tuxedo is not. In order to maximize your closet’s efficiency, store your most-used clothes at eye level, and tuck the rest away at the top or bottom of the closet.
  2. Invest in some storage units. Decide what your closet is lacking, and then invest in those things. If you have a surplus of hanging racks but no space for socks, purchase a few simple plastic drawers to organize small items. If your closet lacks hanging space, you can install a temporary bar or even purchase an attractive garment rack for just outside the closet.
  3. Add a shoe rack. If you’re tired of tripping over runaway shoes on your way to your work clothes every morning, adding a shoe rack (or two) can help. Simple wooden ones can easily line the bottom of your closet, while plastic over-the-door shoe racks are great for storing flip flops, slippers, and other low-profile shoes.
  4. Look for unused space. Getting creative with the space in your closet can help you to maximize storage even further. If you have a crawl space or a few feet of extra room above the closet rod, don’t be shy about using it for clothes or shoes.

Dyer’s: A Memphis Institution for Burgers on Beale Street

Beale Street, as any true music fan knows, is the birthplace of the blues, a historic avenue commemorated in dozens of songs. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination for lovers of live music.

If you’re down on Beale and looking to fill your belly, stop in at Dyer’s. This Memphis institution has been serving up some of the best burgers in town for decades. Elmer “Doc” Dyer has been serving up delicious, juicy hamburgers since 1912, and the secret, as the locals say, is in the grease. Unlike other fast food joints, Dyer’s strains and filters its fry oil, meaning that you’re potentially tasting almost a century of history in every bite. This may seem bizarre, but locals claim it’s the secret to their success! These thin, deep-fried burgers—served without any trimmings—are best enjoyed with a side of hot, crispy fries. If you still have room left over for dessert, give the famous deep-fried Twinkie a go.

  • Reload the remaining food into the fridge.

Culture Shock When Moving

Whenever you move someplace new, it takes time to get adjusted to the surroundings. This is an inevitable process, so try not to get too stressed out when it happens. Instead, take a step back do your best to get to know your new home. Be patient while you’re become acclimated to your new home, and we’re confident you’ll get settled in faster than you ever expected.

The first thing you should know: you’re not alone. For most, it takes about a year to adjust to a new city, especially if it is significantly different than your previous home.

This effect is due to a variety of factors. First, you’re dealing with a new lifestyle and daily routine. You also may not know many friends yet in this new town, and haven’t had the time to get to know your new coworkers or neighbors. Additionally, you have a new living space, which always tends to make us feel uneasy. Finally, you’re left comparing your new city – which you haven’t yet experienced fully – to your old city, where you surely had many fond memories.

But once you realize what you’re going through, it becomes easy to combat this sense of culture shock. To put it simply, you need to open yourself up to your new city and embrace its community. You can do this by:

  • Meeting your neighbors and attending events at your apartment community
  • Visiting local sights and attractions
  • Attending company outings
  • Discovering local cultural events, like concerts or festivals
  • Exercising regularly
