Fair Housing in California

At Castle, we treat our residents, clients, and vendors with fairness and respect. It's the law. It's also the right thing to do.

The California Department of Real Estate (DRE) requires real estate brokers complete 45 hours of continuing education every 4 years in order to renew their licenses. More than two-thirds of these hours are spent taking courses in fair housing, consumer service, and customer protection. Castle has quite a few licensed brokers on staff, but we all take the time to learn fair housing laws.

That’s right: every Castle staff member understands fair housing, whether the law mandates it or not.

Federal and state housing laws ban discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, marital status, national origin, ancestry, disability, sexual orientation, or other personal characteristics not related to responsibility. What’s that last part mean? As property managers, we have the power to screen residents based on substantive, documented facts that impact our communities. If someone is abusive to our staff, has a criminal record or a history of bad debts, we’re not obligated to rent to them.

Castle’s intimate understanding of fair housing laws allows us to build strong, profitable communities where residents feel at home.
